HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

2009 is here! Wow! (:

24 Dec 2008

我踩到柠檬了!

Went roller blading today... My legs so sore now! >0< Correct me if I'm wrong, but roller blading/ice skating seems to be the only type of exercise that uses the inner muscles of the thighs? Dead tired.

Christmas is so so so near! I don't recall doing anything special for Christmas, ever. Except going shopping for little gifts. I'm not exactly excited but Adela is really anticipating Christmas so I'm getting a little affected, she made me sing and play Christmas songs and all :P

I completely forgot about checking my grades until I saw Joanne Loh's post. =_=

EN01017 First Year Writing Sem: A-

Hehe. Yay, changed the grade! :D

21 Dec 2008

Uh...

I woke up at 9 am today. Ok correction I was 'forced' out of bed this morning cause Adela (the 9-year-old girl) came to my bed (hers actually) and woke me up... Sorry if I don't make a lot of sense :p

Random things today...

Webkinz is the "in" thing with kids nowadays. Neopets? What's that? ): I'm actually kinda sad! Neopets is pretty classic... oh well.

Apex, North Carolina is too warm for my Ugg boots.

I still remember how to play 不能说的秘密斗琴第二首, although it took me a while to retrieve finger memory... And I kinda miss playing the piano! Surprise, surprise.

Made tambourines with paper plates today. Colored them with acrylic paint and whatnot... When was the last time I did arts and crafts? -_-

Went Christmas shopping, kinda. Spent an hour with Adela hunting for Christmas gifts, so I didn't get to shop for clothes! Sighhhh. I guess it's a good thing, stopped me from spending too much money or making my luggage explode.

And... I forgot what I wanted to say :P

Tired! Ciao!

Childhood fantasies...

It's kinda funny how some of my childhood fantasies are only coming true when I'm 18. I'm now living in a house that's fully carpeted. I'm sleeping on the top of a bunk bed with a study table underneath. There're rose trims on the walls. The toilets are decorated with neon stars and planets and what not, the shower curtain is double layered with mashimaro prints. Uhh. All very very dream-like and fluffy and cute except that I'm the wrong age (and size)!

Climbing up to my bed is like... ughhhh :P

The family has a daughter in 4th grade and a newborn baby boy. The baby actually doesn't cry that much and I don't really need to entertain him. The little girl though is sticking to me the moment I'm awake. We played monopoly, made invisible ink, tried to french braid our hair and failed, played piano and viola (her, not me), and wii and what not. And she told me to wake up earlier in the mornings so she can play with me, omg :P Thankfully it's holidays for her too so I don't have to tutor her math and chinese... yet.

Yeah. So I'm quite tired... yawnn.

18 Dec 2008

I'm in North Carolina!

Wahooooo!

Haha wow, I'm so beat. And quite sleepy, probably cause the house is so quiet (got newborn baby!)

Everything went quite smoothly, except that I refound my hatred for stairs. Oh and something very suay happened! Had to go through security check, and I was carrying one bag, plus one laptop. Have to take off shoes (I was wearing Ugg, bad choice), jacket and scarf. Then my hand accidentally slipped and my laptop's corner smashed my middle toe. wtfveryPAIN. And then I had to wobble since then... damn pain. My toe's now swollen to twice its size, it's purple and hard and hurtslikeshit. I'm not going to show you pictures unless you request so... :P It's very gross lah. Sigh.

Ok ok, too tired to blog le. My brain refuses to work :P

Two more pictures from this morning! It was sunny <3

17 Dec 2008

It snowed!!

Wow. I'm never trusting the weather report again.

It's winter wonderland! Although the snow isn't really thick and all, but I'm pretty happy! And my UGG boots and rain/snow boots arrived as well! I know you're thinking... what a spoilt brat! :P I kinda think so too but seriously, my boots got all soaked this morning and it wasn't pleasant at all.

Surprisingly it isn't so cold... The rain is annoying, but it doesn't feel as cold as Shanghai did last year.

It still hasn't really hit me yet that the year is going to be over soon!

But anyway, I've officially ended my semester now! Last exam, DONE! Sort of screwed it up a little bit but oh well...

Pictures pictures! I just realized the sky's color is rather like Shanghai as in grey and ugly. = = Sorry some of the pictures are blurry cause I was walking and quickly snapping them, it's not nice to walk in soaked boots ok :P

It's so quiet and serene.
My winter wonderland.
But who do I share it with?

I'm reminded on the day our chem class carried giant beakers and collected snow on the SSIS field. Frozen hands. Wide smiles. Joyous jumps. Childish snowball fights. Happy times. (:

And I bought some textbooks... Sigh. Ridiculously expensive. There're buybacks but they pay really little. At least I can exchange texts with other communication majors!

Okay I have to shower, then do my laundry and finish packing!

<3

16 Dec 2008

Just one more...

Eh, I'm so lazy to blog but it's been a while leh!

Just one more exam tomorrow and I'm free free free! Wahaha!

Did some packing, about 70% done? Super heavy lugguage... how am I gonna take the T ah? o.O Still need to do laundry tomorrow and get rid of perishable items yadda yadda... I really hope I don't leave important things behind... >0<

Watched the movie "300" yesterday night in friend's room, about King Leonidas leading 300 Spartan soldiers against Persians. Yeah it's a pretty old movie. Very morbid and gross at certain parts... 很MAN的电影。The thing that struck me as ironic is that it's so historically erroneous. I mean... Greeks were the one who owned slaves and Persia was the country that slaves escaped to... Oh well :P

I don't know if it's luckily or unluckily, there'll be heavy snow in Boston on Friday, the day after I leave! So I won't be getting a white christmas in Boston this year! On 25th I'll be at South Carolina Myrtle beach, lol! Very interesting.

By the way, I've always pronounced "interesting" as in-truh-sting, but a lot of people here say in-ter-uh-sting. Like Brits pronounce "lieutenant" as lef-ten-uhnt. I personally think loo-ten-uhnt makes a lot more sense but lef-ten-uhnt sounds more cool? :D

Ok ok, enough bullshitting! Happy Holidays everyone! ((:

12 Dec 2008

@_@!!!

BOO.

All the materials I have to read for Race, Class and Gender exam...

All double paged ok!!! Wa lao... royally screwed. Don't tell me that doesn't seem like a lot, I'll scream at you. :P

Interesting doodle...

Christmas Package! <3

My package from Shanghai finally arrives! Took like forever... but at least it came before winter break!

Bloody 20kg... stupid stairs... but it's all worth it!!

Man, my mom is like a packing genius. Clothes, pants, coats, stockings, boots, shoes, furry slippers, gloves, scarves, hats, bags, and other 乱七八糟的东西... !!!! @_@

So very very very very touched! Thanks mom! Best Christmas present I can ever get. XD

But then... now I have to keep all these stuff in my tiny room! Headache. x_x

The thought of having to pack EVERYTHING when summer comes is just horrific.

...

Oh well. I have boots now, so happy! One pair of knee-length leather tall boots, two pairs of chunky short boots, one pair of short furry warm boots!! Wow, from 0 pairs to 4, pretty insane... but totally made my day! Now that I'm armed with boots, stockings, scarves, hats and gloves, I feel much more prepared for winter! Hehehe :D

How I wish I can have a catalog of everything I own and I can just browse through the pictures, click on it and the item will magically appear before my eyes! WAHAHA. Ok, completely day dreaming, but wouldn't that be nice? Sometimes I'll totally forget that I own this particular piece of clothing, or I simply can't find what I want, which gets really annoying... I want a walk-in closet! Ganbatte!! >0<

为walk-in closet而努力工作!! Wonder what my future boss will say about that :P

Oh and I won't be in Boston during winter break! Change of plans, I'm going to North Carolina! XD

---

Edit// My playlist thing is annoying me like anything... some of the links keep failing! WHY! So frustrating!! GRR. I wanna change the music player... any suggestions?

Oh! And there's free coffee available during exam period... hahaha so cute! I'm not that big a fan of coffee though, oh well. XD

8 Dec 2008

Woohoo!

I just officially ended my last day of school for Fall 08! :D

Well actually I don't feel any different but time passes so fast. I'd probably miss my classes, but sadly I can't do anything about that. I can only hope that classes for next semester would be fun too.

It apparently snowed last night, cause this morning there were some pathetic patches of snow and ice. It's freezing today. -8°C! Wa lao... But tomorrow it's warmer again... always alternating between warm and cold, weird weird weather.

I should probably say something sentimental or profound or philosophical but my brain is slipping into lazy mood already so... yeah. Wish me luck for my finals! :D

5 Dec 2008

Almost there...

Second to last day of class!

Starting study break on next Wed is as ridiculous as SSIS reopening school on like a Thurs... It just doesn't make sense lah! :P I wish I could skip my classes on Mon, but can't... SIGH.

Was lying on the bed this morning after my alarm clock rang, thinking to myself: why do I have to wake up so early to go to class and brave the -5 temperature outside?! Very nearly went back to sleep... -_-||

I realized that as the semester progress, I tend to get more and more lethargic and slip a little. I think I screwed up Public Speaking. Boo. But I'm not going to think about all that at least for today! My brain just wants to stop thinking. Yep.

却还是留在那边

Happy 18th Birthday Tau Herng! Wow, time flies! I'm not nearly as entertaining as Joanne Loh, pai seh hor! :P

I feel old! XD

My Writing Seminar portfolio is driving me nuts. Up the wall. Whatever. +0+

So tired I don't even feel like blogging.

It was a random thought, but I suddenly realized that even though I think lyrics are important to a song, if there wasn't a good melody in the first place, I wouldn't have noticed the lyrics?

---

1 Dec 2008

It's December!!

I'm late!! But happy birthday yali!! (: 终于18岁了耶!

---

I'm STRESSEDDDDDDDD.

The next two to three weeks are going to be very, very hectic!! Writing Seminar Portfolios due, essays to write and rewrite, and lots of revision to do!

At least I'm completely done with Public Speaking. Finished my last speech today and already turned in my term paper so that's one class off my shoulder.

I'm so screwed for Writing Seminar though... 3 major essays to be perfected, but my third one deserves to be thrown into the paper shredder. Portfolio due next Thursday!!! TAT

I just realized we only start study break next Wed, means only two days of classes off, which isn't enough at all! How how how... 完蛋了!

Going to register for spring classes in about 7 minutes. Please please let me get the classes I want! My perfect schedule is already screwed, hopefully Plan B works...

I'm running completely on adrenaline now. I realized that I'm extra hyper and talkative when I'm on adrenaline, which is kinda interesting and scary at the same time.

Yeah. I'm so rambling.

---

Update:

Okay. Here's my tentative schedule for Spring...

Yeah you can gloat now. I have classes every single day! No more sleep-ins on weekdays... Obviously I don't love my schedule. Damn those people who took all the Research Methods and Literatures of the World classes! :P Boo.

Why am I still taking Chinese? Cause it's a one year thing lah! Help my GPA too.

Elements of Dance all filled too, so I'm stuck with music. How come I foresee myself having a hard time during Spring? )):

THANKSGIVING!

I'm officially on holiday!! School starts next Monday, which I have my speech to do, but never mind!! :D

Happy happy!

Had a rather long chat with Sue today about our Writing Seminar class, I think I will miss all my classes a lot after the semester ends!! Time passes too fast... and I really have quite an easy combination of classes this semester, only Race, Class and Gender is driving me crazy. Oh the joys of being a Freshmen. XD

I can't wait till winter break when I'll have absolutely nothing to do, yet I don't really want first semester to be over so quickly, to think I probably won't even meet some of those people in class ever again!

And I dread all the revision I have to do for Race, Class and Gender. Agony. Torture. Sickening.

Probably won't update as frequently for this week! Ciao!

Icy cold

You're probably sick of hearing me complain about the weather but I can't help it! Was waiting for the shuttle today and had my back against the wind, it felt as if I was leaning completely against ICE. Literally frozen.

I remember an article saying that our sensitivity to temperature is due to habits and can be changed. I must have been wrapped in layers and layers when I was young, that's why I'm so vulnerable to cold now. - -

On a lighter note, I found a new love! GRAPEFRUIT! So damn nice! :D It's pretty and juicy and healthy! It tastes like chinese pomelo but doesn't have the bitter taste, 10 fingers up!!

I'm totally tuned in to holiday mood already... Didn't touch work AT ALL yesterday. XD

20 Nov 2008

FIRE DRILL?!

AGAIN! And I was sleeping!

It was like -2 degree celsius outside! Freaking insane, pfft. Three fire trucks came... -_- But they were dilly dallying so obviously there's no real fire. Man, so suay, why must have fire drill on my rest day! TAT

18 Nov 2008

ATROCIOUS!

http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singaporeseen/viewContent.jsp?id=41849

Don't know how people have seen this article, about ACJC birthday celebration thing.

Seriously. I don't think there are ANY reasons justified for this kind of behavior. It's literally torture. Oh please, culture? Do we really need this kind of culture? If these students are the products of our education system, what will the future be like?

Plain mean. Period.

If you don't want this to happen to you, it probably means it's WRONG.

Oh nooooooooooo

Today
Hi: 5 °C Lo: -3 °C

Wednesday
Hi: 3 °C Lo: -4 °C

Soooooooooooo coooooooooold. ><

And take a look at this...

HAHAHA WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT?!

Okay I can see the integral sign and pi and d, but seriously. = = I'm so glad I don't take classes like that :P

Need to write another essay today... TAT

17 Nov 2008

BUSY.

Need to write 4 logs for my Topic Seminar class (ok ok I know this is my fault cause I procrastinated too much), and do the readings. And it's the last class tomorrow, very very sad!

Need to catch up on readings for Race, Class, and Gender class as well.

Cultural analysis essay due on Wed for First Year Writing, and 2 peer essay responses!

X_X

But I don't have my 9 am and 11 am classes on Friday and next Monday! WOOHOO I CAN SLEEP LATE! :D And thank goodness my problem-solving speech is after Thanksgiving.

Got bad news too, printer ran out of toner! Now you can imagine how much reading I have to do!! (Apparently one toner lasts for 1500 pages? I highly doubt so...) Bookstore only sells ink cartridges, pfftt. $64.99 for a new toner! ))): But at least shipping is free... But got taxes! Keep forgetting taxes! Haiz.

I'm so so so so sleepy...................... No energy to blog, hehe.

13 Nov 2008

I don't really have anything to say leh...

So why am I blogging? I don't know. :P

This looks pretty good right? But tastes so-so only... or maybe it's just me? ): Western food can look really good but I'm almost never completely satisfied by the taste. I really think westerners are quite deprived of good food... Surely they get sick of pasta and pizza and burgers and fries and sandwiches too? -_- You'd think I'll be eating pizza all the time here, but actually I don't think they're as good as the ones in Papa Johns! I MISS PAPA JOHNS! Sigh. I MISS GOOD FOOD!

It's my last Freshmen Topic Seminar class next Tues! Very sad... I'll miss this class and Rhetorical Tradition so much! TAT

Oh did I mention that the Cultural Diversity exam is cumulative? OMG. I'm so so so so screwed. And the exam is on a Saturday some more!!!! SO EVIL!!! -0-

Boo, have to study for quiz tomorrow... z_z

10 Nov 2008

About 6 weeks left until winter break

And I still don't know if I can stay in my dorm yet! :P Meeting with some residential head on Wed to talk about it, need to call and make appointment some more, 15 minutes! Any suggestions how to charm the guy into letting me stay? :D

This is completely an understatement but time just flew by! I'm very near the end of the semester! OMG! Who said you could dilly dally in college and accomplish a lot? Well if I keep going at this pace I don't think so! It's like almost 1/8 of my college life is done already! 0_0 Scary thought!

I'm so sleepy that I woke up 30 minutes late this morning! I'm amazed that I still managed to go to class on time, even though I forgot to zip my bag and dropped all my stuff on the floor on the way downhill, damn embarrassing I'd say. - - I'm more than thankful that I only get crazy days like these 3 times a week so there's always something to look forward to, or else I'll go nuts!

Got my cultural diversity exam back!

Definitely not as pro as yali but I'm happy cause I got a B on the last exam! Scared myself to death cause I saw the "C" first (A, B, C different question formats), phew!

Remember I said that I hate salads? (Well, I do like potato salads but the one at school looks gross) I actually found one that I like! Teriyaki salmon salad, with asian sesame dressing!

The only annoying thing about this is that I have to take out the 香菜, 葱 and mushroom. I like mushrooms but those are dry and uncooked and gross. Maybe you're thinking ew cooked salmon? What's so nice about that? I used to dislike cooked salmon too, I mean why would you cook salmon if sashimi is so damn good? Well since I don't have the luxury of having sashimi at school, this is like a perfect substitute! It's nice. :D

Ok I'm hungry, going off to eat my salad!

9 Nov 2008

Bored.

Under Grace's recommendation - sorta - I tried the Karaoke thing too.

Hm. It's quite brainless, really, to expect you to follow every note exactly? I don't think they care about the words either, maybe you can la-la-la and it'll have the same effect. And obviously some songs are a lot harder to sing, with rap and stuff. XD

I want a Chinese version!! Cannot Sing english songs... OTL

8 Nov 2008

Currently reading: Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult

Ok, I finished the book. Jodi Picoult's endings are always shocking, I have to read at least twice to make some sense out of them. But this ending was particularly hard to grasp, even after re-reading the ending 5 times I still feel like I was missing the message. Quite sickening, to be very frank. Nevertheless, the read was still enjoyable, like most of her other books, it's just hard to stop!

If I remember correctly, President-to-be Obama said something like "...being my sister's keeper, my brother's keeper..." during the 2004 DNC, did he read that book too? Hahaha.

Oh and I've got a microwave oven now! I don't really understand why a kettle and rice cooker cannot be used in dorms but a microwave is acceptable but whatever. It's like stainless steel, bloody heavy. I wonder how on earth I'm going to move all the stuff out of my room when summer comes. OTL

5 Nov 2008

Despite lack of sleep...

STILL VERY EXCITED ABOUT OBAMA WINNING!!!

Democrats in control of both the Senate and the House! Wow, phenomenal. I wonder why I just happen to be in US during the most significant election, haha, very cool!

Well Obama still didn't get the majority of white male votes, but thank goodness for the youth votes and female votes! For some reason white males are always more pro-Republican. I know there's like a whole history behind this blah blah, never mind.

I sincerely hope that it won't be just 'lip-service' during Obama's term, as some people are saying. Please don't disappoint us! And be safe.

Ok that was very American sounding, no I don't want to be American, but after all I'm definitely staying put for 4 years (maybe 6) so it still concerns me right!

Moving away from big issues back to my life. Got back Rhetorical Tradition exam today, two mistakes, 265/275! Got improvement... but if I got 270 my name would have appeared on the blackboard! Boo. Only 2 with full scores this time and 2 with 270. Final exam is out of 375 though... eek. As long as I study for this class I think it's going to be a grade A! :D

Not so sure about Cultural Diversity... ~_~

Busy busy today, and so sleepy!

ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZzzz...

4 Nov 2008

ELECTION!

GO OBAMA!

PLEASE PLEASE WIN!

Back to research essay writing... OTL

--Update:

OMG!! 297 vs. 139!!

First African-American President of United States! 44th President of United States!

BRAVO!

3 Nov 2008

Obama's grandmother dies hours before election

omg.

Terribly saddening.

I'm lost for words. On a lighter note, 2 Canadian comedians (if I'm not mistaken) prank called Sarah Palin, wow.

ELECTION DAY TOMORROW!

2 Nov 2008

Daylight savings time??

OK............

WHAT IS THIS? I have no prior knowledge of this whatsoever! What am I supposed to do with my clock!? Go back or go forward 1 hour?? I'm all confused...

IF I'm interpreting this correctly, I just got on extra hour for the day! How weird. I feel kinda insecure... ><

So now I'm actually 13 hours behind Shanghai/Singapore.

哎呀。好麻烦哦。混乱。

Messy, rambled thoughts

Was Aristotle the one who said life is about the pursuit of happiness?

So how come we spend so much time doing things that we don't like? Why can't we spend more time being happy and less time trying to be?

Who's to say what we're doing is right or wrong? Why must we care about what others think and whether we're being the norm? Why must we feel compelled to do what we're expected to do and be afraid to be labeled 'different' or 'weird'? Why is there peer pressure? Why is hard to be ourselves?

I think the questions just proved that I'm too self-conscious and care too much about what others think. But sometimes I can't help it. 鱼和熊掌真的不能兼得吗?

It's hard to change even though I'm well aware of my weaknesses. I don't like to approach people and initiate small talk. I'm too introverted when I'm around people I don't know well. I'm afraid to take risks. I hate awkwardness and embarrassement. I'm indecisive and easily swaywed. I'm afraid to say no.

I came here to remove myself from my comfort zone. And frankly sometimes I do feel like fish out of water. It's not like I'm unhappy, and I do enjoy my classes even though I stress over exams and assignments. It's not easy. There are so many things to learn, academically, socially, and life in general, living alone and stuff. I guess it's because I'm still not used to the new environment and people and all, but sometimes I wonder if I ever will.

I know that I'm a fortunate person. Maybe I complain too much. But seriously, I find myself spending much more time trying to be happy, rather than being happy. Does that even make sense?

I'm not emo, I just think too much.

On a side note, Grace's entry about bullying reminded me of something that happened to me during Freshmen Orientation. We were sitting in our assigned groups eating breakfast (buffet style), I put my apple into my bag cause I was full and didn't want to eat it then. A girl, Cat, asked our group leader who just joined us if it was ok for us to take food out of the cafeterias, he said yes we could. She questioned further if it was ok if it's like a buffet thing, he replied yes. Only then that I realized she was talking about me! I was quite shocked and embarrassed, but didn't say anything. I don't know if she sincerely wanted to ask or she wanted our leader to say it's wrong so I would feel ashamed. Couldn't she tell me directly instead? Quite a memorable experience. XD

29 Oct 2008

Damn wind.

Temperature now: 1.8°C
Tonight: -1 °C

Tomorrow Hi: 9 °C Lo: -2 °C

...

Wa lao eh, I don't think I've ever been in a place this cold! And windy. Wind is annoying.

Something very scary happened this morning, I woke up and went to the bathroom, when I came back I couldn't open my door! The key pad lock thing screwed up, numbers 1 2 3 7 8 9 no response! WHAT!! I freaked out but I couldn't scream cause it's like 8 am. And I wasn't wearing glasses so I'm also half blind. And I have to get to class! Thankfully my RA happened to walk pass so I told her about it and she went to get the keys to open my door. While waiting for her I kept pressing the keys and suddenly they worked! Phew! Damn scary. What a horrible start to the morning!

Totally an omen. Cultural Diversity exam was bad bad bad. I don't even want to think about it! I realized I'm not very good at foreseeing essay questions, boo.

I'm so loaded with work it's not even funny!!

1. Exam review session tonight
2. Studying Abroad Info Session tomorrow
3. Rhetorical Tradition Exam on Fri
4. Evaluative persuasive speech on Mon
5. 3 Peer essay evaluations due on Mon + one reading
6. Research essay 2nd draft due on Wed
7. Extra credit event on Wed
8. Get flu shot on Wed
9. Reading assignments for classes and other miscellaneous stuff

Funny how it doesn't seem like a lot when it's all listed, but trust me it's overwhelming!

I have to go for conference (writing) later in a few minutes. It's so cold I don't want to work!!

I can't wait for weekend to come!

27 Oct 2008

I hate time of the month.

Uggghhhhhhh.

超级不爽的。整个礼拜都完蛋了,没有精神!

Is this why it's necessary to get a baby otherwise we'll have suffered all the pain for nothing?

Well ok, there are people who don't feel the pain at all. Super jealous!

Mon, Wed and Fri are long days, especially today cause I was sleepy and in pain. Reached my room at 4 pm-ish and had to crawl into bed, curled awkwardly into foetus position and fell asleep almost immediately. Forced myself out of bed at 6:30 to get dinner.

Would love to hide under my blanket now and hope that all sorts of troubles will solve themselves. Such as whether I could get extension to stay in my dorm during winter break or I might need to do some last minute travel plans. And I need to move out of my room completely within 24 hours of my last final exam, what on earth do I do with all my stuff?

Sometimes it's just so ridiculous, life as an international student.

Lots of activities tomorrow, class discussion, dinner with my 'big sister', need to watch a debate to write a paper for public speaking and rhetorical tradition as well. And there's the ridiculously heavy content cultural diversity exam to prepare for (after I complete the course I'm gonna take a picture of all the reading I had to do, it's insane). And my writing prof. just said today that we need to bring the latest draft of our research essay for class on Wed. ARGH.

This is completely random, but most people here use ball-point pens, instead of ink pens, wonder why?

25 Oct 2008

Early Saturday

While I'm not thrilled to wake up earlier than noon on a Saturday, chocolate buffet at Langhem Hotel was pretty awesome! It's those posh hotels where it costs a bomb to eat anything there, but the school is paying for this, so YAY!

Sorry I was so totally into eating and talking that I only took two pictures. I actually didn't finish everything, I really can't eat so many sweet things! But all the desserts are so cute and pretty! Looking at them make me happy! I was being very selective, there are probably around 80 types, my favourites were truffles, opera cake and macaroons! Heaven for people with sweet tooth, but also a place to avoid at all cost unless you can afford to get fat.

I have like two exams coming up... boo. I was going to say that I will be studying like crazy this weekend but we all know that won't happen. :P And I've given up thinking about what I should do on Halloween, but at least I have the excuse that I have exam on that day, I guess... XD

Oh I just found out that my finals end by mid May or so, and school reopens in Sept!!!!!!!! LOOONG SUMMMER WHEEEEE! HK, Shanghai, Singapore here I come!!

Weather is good!!

Ignore my hand.

Failed attempt at a bun.

Double post!

Oops, it's raining now.

Went to library just now to do research. I'm still amazed at the number of books there are. omg I think I spent like 2 hours there, not very good at locating books... There are so many many books on China, I even saw a big book on China propaganda posters! If SSIS had such a library it'd be a lot easier to get A and 7s for EE and IAs and whatnot! Bliss. Ok, bliss compared to not having resources but it's a headache going through all the reading.

There are even government documents! They have these cool spacesaver shelves that can be moved to the right or left automatically if you press a button. I was just wondering if anyone got stuck in between shelves before... or do they have high tech sensors kind of thing? Haha.

Arrgghh, I don't feel like writing my research essay! ): And I have conference with the prof. tomorrow so I can't even run away or something. ROAR.

And who else received the email from the GYLC people about ISLP? What is that?? Weird. XD

The nicer things in life

'Erin Brockovich' was amazing! All the more inspirational/touching/intriguing that it's based on a true story! It just made me wonder how many young, ambitious people became lawyers in hopes to bring justice to others but gradually are numbed by legislation, paper work and the sometimes unreasonable law and court system, they start losing their passion and integrity. Beyond sad. I mean, the law is created by people, so why are some people not getting what they deserve (both good and bad)? It's all just very disheartening to me. Oh wait! I was supposed to talk about nice things!! ...

Chocolate brunch on Saturday at downtown! :D Woooooooooooooo, paid by the school wahahahaha. I'm a little apprehensive about everything being chocolate, but at least it'll look nice? That keeps me happy for now, hehe.

Uh... more happy things? It's not raining today.

什么是快乐

Just wanted to write some rubbish chinese.

Brrrr Monday

I can't use refreshing or cooling to describe the wind anymore. It's just cold. The wind makes its way through layers of clothes and makes my face numb. And it's not even snowing yet! I still see people wearing short sleeves, or bermuda shorts. I secretly think they're insane, abnormal, sickening :P Can some brilliant scientist discover a gene which can make us resistant to cold please?

I went to the walk-in help tech desk today and my portable hard drive seems perfectly fine. It's just that the usb ports on the back of the laptop doesn't seem to be providing enough power? The side ones worked fine. What the...

Of course I'm relieved, but it's such a stupid problem! Why do things like that happen out of the blue?! Technical problems irk me. To think I went through all the worrying and troubles of researching and trying to remove something which cannot be removed. Someone needs to invent an idiot-proof program which tells people exactly what the problem is and how to solve it. Pfftt. :P

I refuse to think about all the exams and assignments next week. Yep.

Oh I finally got a 100 for my Chinese test! But I also realized that the language courses are a year thing not a semester thing, which means I can't take Japanese next year and I will only be able to get to 2nd year Japanese cause I'll be studying abroad during Junior year! Oh no! ):

Two movie assignments this week are 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Hotel Rwanda'. Seriously how many of times have I seen 'Hotel Rwanda'? XD Last week was 'Malcolm X', and today we watched MLK Jr.'s 'I have a Dream' speech. History lessons actually came handy. :P And I suddenly miss Ms Berry (ok not Ms anymore but I don't know her husband's name)! I don't know if anyone still remember how she played a prank on us by saying the school only allowed the boys to go to Africa (or somewhere else, I forgot) but not girls, and even segregated us in class? We got so pissed that we complained to Ms Yap! Hilarious, we completely fell for it. XD

Started watching Project Runway Season 5, personally don't think the contestants are as good as the seasons before... maybe it's just me. I love how Heidi Klum looks gorgeous and impeccable every time, geeze. :P

I'm soo sleepy. ZZZZzzzzZzzzz...

Must-Have-Friends-With-Certain-Expertise

Not listed in order.

1. Doctor (but then you don't know which illness you'll get so it may not be the one in your friend's field? hmmm, but at least he/she will know other doctor friends too, I guess... XD)

2. Lawyer (hopefully won't even need this friend to fight my case but for consultation purposes :P)

3. Financial planner or stockbroker (the purpose is quite obvious :P but on second thought I don't think I'll even talk about my finances with a friend o_0)

4. Someone who knows where to get the best food!

5. Someone who knows how to plan travel trips!

6. A genius who can deal with computer/3C product problems! OMG I NEED THIS PERSON NOW!!! I can't access my F drive in my portable hard disk... T_T I can see E and F in my computer but F is corrupted and unaccessible! I did some research, suspect it's cause of some 'autorun.inf' thing. Tried to remove it with some programs but CANNOT! At my wit's end!

Haiz. I hate how unreliable technical products are.

The weather is sunny and gorgeous today but I'm in such a foul moooooood.

Currently reading: Towards Zero by Agatha Christie

I have a weighing scale now! And a food diary, which is basically a record of what I eat for every day. I'm not sure if I can lose weight but I definitely don't want to gain weight. With all the pasta and cheese and whatnot, sigh...

It's getting cold again, but at least not raining on weekend this time. (: Oh, I noticed that girls here wear tights (are those called tights? black legging sorta thing but ends at calf or ankle?) without wearing any skirt or shorts or whatever over it! I mean... I've never seen anyone else dress like that, but I guess it works... just a little strange and awkward. XD

Some picture updates which I haven't been uploading...

Huge huge huge screen and cute keyboard! You have to give Apple some credit for making 3C products so sleek and chio :D

Random urge to take a picture cause it looked nice. The picture probably doesn't look too nice cause you can't really see the lighting...

'Salmon lover' at Prudential :D

Attempt at changing my hairstyle... Somehow the girls here can do pretty buns which are natural and chio but I have no idea how they do that!

Again, it wasn't supposed to be this dark cause sunlight was in my face, but now they seem a little emo. I wasn't emo, I was just bored. :P

Fried fish sandwich! Probably the cheapest choice for a meal, $3.69! I know tartar sauce is fattening but can't help it!

Uh, had to take pictures to see how my hair looked from the back.

Lastly, narcissism

Finished Reading: Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult

I love her books! This one actually doesn't include any court scenes at all!

I still have a lot of her books back in Shanghai... Guess I'll only get to read them when I go back during summer.

The library's an awesome place to study, but since I have my own room I don't really need go there. XD Maybe before finals, less distraction.

The credits management course was really useful. The US credit report system thing is really confusing... I wish I have the IQ and interest to study finances but I realize it's really not my type of thing. Granted I'm getting annoyed at writing assignments but I'd take up literature than finance any day, that's just me. XD

Eat Your Germs

By SANJAY GUPTA, M.D.

No doubt you have heard that yogurt is teeming with bacteria—and no doubt you try not to think about that as you dig into a cup of the stuff. Yes, they're supposed to be good bacteria, ones that not only don't make you sick but actually improve your health. Still, a spoonful of critters with unlovely names like Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidus regularis will never sound like a palate pleaser to even the most dedicated health nut.

Whether or not you've ever developed a taste—or even a tolerance—for living things in your lunch, more are on the way. Food companies have been coming to the conclusion that if a few of these superstar bacteria are good for you, then more will be even better. This is giving rise to a small but growing product line called probiotics, in which the bacteria population is boosted, sometimes considerably. For consumers, of course, the question is, Do these products work?

Probiotics have been around for a long time, mostly in the form of dietary supplements. They're also found naturally in foods like yogurt, buttermilk, sauerkraut and tofu. Recently, however, the Dannon Co. has been making a marketing splash with a yogurt line named Activia, which is fortified with extra bacteria. So far, this bet seems to be paying off, with more than $100 million in sales in the product's first year in the U.S. alone. Other companies are coming forward with probiotic yogurt drinks and fortified beverages, which are also finding a market. There is a fair body of science suggesting that some consumers are spending their dollars wisely.

"The superstar bacteria stick around in your intestines a lot longer," says Dr. Gary Huffnagle, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan and co-author of The Probiotics Revolution. In the digestive tract, the bacteria help regulate and restore peristalsis, the rhythmic motion of the intestine that pushes digested food through. There's a reason one of the bugs has the word regularis as its second name, and this intestinal toning is it. "Doesn't matter if you are constipated or the opposite," Huffnagle says. "These bacteria can help make you, um, regular."

Huffnagle's research also suggests that the bacteria can battle numerous kinds of allergies—and not just food allergies. This is a somewhat harder scientific case to make, but Huffnagle's belief is that since anything you breathe you may also swallow in at least some quantity, the good bacteria in your gut could help control allergens.

Not everyone is sold on probiotics. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is relatively neutral, using the growing popularity of the products as an opportunity to caution manufacturers not to pitch the foods as some sort of panacea for any specific disease. More important, some people should avoid the products altogether. Those with weakened immune systems or who are critically ill would be well advised to stay away from eating live bacteria. Certainly anyone in the hospital would also count. Furthermore, the products can take a little getting used to, even for the otherwise healthy. If you are new to the world of probiotics and you suddenly start eating a lot, there is a good chance you could experience uncomfortable bloating.

"You have just started a civil war in your intestines between good bacteria and bad bacteria," Huffnagle says. Fortunately, the war is usually over in one or two weeks, and, stresses Huffnagle, "the good guys win."

Expect to see lots of those good guys on store shelves soon. At least five companies in the U.S. either are in the probiotic game or are planning to enter. Plain yogurt remains the best product for added bacteria because it has three things the bugs absolutely love: lactose (or naturally occurring sugar), fat and water. Another food out there with both sugar and fat is chocolate, and—you guessed it—the company Attune already has a probiotic chocolate bar. That's something that may prompt me to give the superstar bacteria a try after all.

In library hogging the computer

Of course I can use my own laptop and be comfy in my dorm room but Sue decided to pull me along to the library so now I am sitting on a high chair hogging the library computer doing nothing productive at all! :P Wow, long sentence.

Ok good things first. I'm loving the carpets of red, orange, yellow leaves on campus, which give me such good moods! How could anyone not love autumn/fall? It's amazing!

Now the bad side, I feel overwhelmed by all the things I have to do!

GEEZE.

1. Chinese exam on Friday. Sure, it's easy but it's still an exam.
2. Public Speaking quiz on Monday. Ughhh, definitions!!
3. Research Essay draft due next Wednesday. This is one I'm pissed about. I haven't really started doing research yet!! I'll have to work hard on this one during weekend... SIGH.
4. Read 3 peer essays, which means 3 reviews due on Monday.
5. Journal for Freshmen Topic Seminar. I keep pushing this off.
6. Reading assignment and response for Cultural Diversity due Friday!
7. Some meeting about managing finances tomorrow evening. This is optional but I thought it would be helpful.

Also, last presidential debate tonight! Wonder if I should watch it on TV or on youtube or something the next day.

Got back Cultural Diversity first exam. Got a B!!!!! ARGH!!! So worried about the second exam... Reading assignments are so wordy and sometimes I just get so bored! The Prof doesn't give guidelines at all so I'm not sure if I'm missing some important points in class. Lately we have been doing more discussion like activities and not lecture which leaves me clueless about the points I should pick up. Frustrating!! Need to start memorizing authors and their concepts, and definitions. I'm bad at definitions. OTL

Ok, done complaining.

GG Spoilers! Sorta.

The reason why I didn't blog about GG was because I completely forgot it was Monday night! I just watched episode 6 just now, I think Serena wins just solely based on how she dressed! :P LOVE HER BLAZER OMG!

I'm glad they reconciled though, can't really stand too much cat fights and bitchiness. Scheming Chuck obviously got the upper hand with the yalies but he definitely needs a friend, the three guys may end up being buddies, who knows. :D

Lastly, Lily and Rufus FTW!! Poor Lily, poor Rufus. Sigh.

The world goes round and round

This entry probably doesn't make sense to anyone else, and wasn't intended to make sense whatsoever.

Why do we keep seeing repetition?

Repetition of thoughts. Repetition of feelings. Repetition of words said, or unsaid. Repetition of what was seen, or what we thought we saw. Repetition of tests and difficulties and hurdles to overcome.

Having been through something once doesn't make us 'immune' to it, does it?

Why do we keep going in circles? Why must we fall in step with the trails we left behind? Why must we relive the same agony over and over? Why can't we say 'forget it' and really do?

Gorgeous gorgeous weather

This weekend has fabulous weather so far!! :D Hope it stays sunny and breezy throughout the week, hehe.

Went out today to Copley (Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond), then Prudential (Body Shop, Sephora, Shaws), ate sushi and salmon. :D I don't seem to have a lot of luck with catching trains/buses, spent at least an hour, probably more than that, waiting for transportation... Fortunately it wasn't cold, if not... - -

While waiting for the shuttle bus to arrive, saw four japanese girls. One of them was wearing this gorgeous-to-die-for pair of gold pumps!! Another one was wearing a double-beasted button down honey-colored coat (which I love!!) with black stockings and black pumps, I thought that was quite sleek and sexy but maybe only to asians. XD Probably should have asked them where they bought them, hmm...

I'm going to Newbury Street tomorrow (which I think is something like Orchard Rd?) to check out H&M, American Apparel, American Eagle, A&F and whatnot!! Kk, I'll try to restrain myself since I've already spent quite a lot today, but I definitely want to get a nice winter coat from H&M! :D

Oh, 《魔杰座》大陆版 came out on eMule, should I get it now or wait for the TW version? ><

Better get some reading done, still don't know what to do for research essay yet! ): Ja!

10 Oct 2008

Introducing... who?

Check out this video, damn hilarious :D

The weather today and yesterday are fabulous! Sunny yay!

The weather report for my windows sidebar doesn't seem to be working ):

Anyway, got my position speech results, 112/120. Not very satisfied if you ask me... I should probably start studying for the quiz but I don't like reading the textbook online!! ><

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO A 3-DAY WEEKEND! WEEEEEEEE :D

8 Oct 2008

Phew!

Done with speech! HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF! I'm not sure if I nailed it, but I'm so happy it's over! I felt like puking (slept too late) and my stomach felt really funny before the speech, but once I started talking I forgot about being nervous. Maybe cause some friends in that class were really encouraging. (: Hopefully I'll get a decent score, but I'm thrilled that I can slack for the next three classes when the others do their speeches, hehe.

Random: Saw a girl who looks like Blake Lively!! Ok from afar, but chio nevertheless!

Ok ok, I figured out yesterday that I needed to change the settings for 'language for non-Unicode' in order to play RO, or view Chinese in txt files. I wish I knew that early, maybe don't need to change all the song names manually!! Gahhh, but I'm already done. - -

Added new songs to playlist! 小酒窝很好听~说好的幸福呢 听了超想哭。Tell me if the songs are not working, thanks! (:

Random

If you haven't already seen this on my MSN screen name: 电饭煲烘出来的croissants超赞的!!

真的啦!不信你可以试试看,脆脆酥酥的!:P

When I don't feel like drinking any hot tea/hot chocolate, my hair dryer comes in handy as my source of warmth. XD The downside is that it's too noisy.

I made dinner for myself today, somehow the process of making it is actually more enjoyable than the eating part?

Carrots, lettuce, mushrooms.

The noodles, which I find too soft, or maybe I cooked them for too long. ><

My whole room had carrot smell afterwards.

Done!

Okay, back to speech preparation! T_T
